A Canadian Bowed Strings Duo
Kamancello, comprised of Shahriyar Jamshidi and Raphael Weinroth-Browne, is an East-meets-West duo whose music transcends genres and cultural boundaries. Their highly evocative improvised performances unite the Kurdish Kamānche with the classical cello while traveling beyond both musical traditions. The duo has made waves with performances at Montreal’s Place des Arts for Festival du Monde Arabe, the Tirgan Festival at Toronto’s Harbourfrount Centre, the Canadian Opera Company, the Aga Khan Museum’s concert series, and the Cello Biennale Amsterdam. Recorded in one take, their self-titled debut album, which includes six improvised pieces, has been met with unanimous critical acclaim. In May 2019, Kamancello made their orchestral debut performing their own double concerto “Convergence Suite,” with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra to an enthusiastic sold-out audience. Their second full-length album, Kamancello II: Voyage, is out in the same year, record as well as the group’s orchestral debut as soloists with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra. Kamancello’s third full-length album Of Shadows is also released digitally in 2020.
